Arrival of passengers at Chetumal airport grew 15 percent in 2019
The arrival of passengers and cargo at Chetumal International Airport grew by 15 and five percent respectively compared to the previous year, according to data from Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA), which seeks to motivate new routes and connections from this terminal whose remodeling and expansion will be ready before the end of the first quarter of this year.
The administrator of the Chetumal Airport, Alberto García Magaña, indicated that two jobs are currently being carried out at the Chetumal International Airport, one of them on the landing strip where they work at forced marches during the early hours so that before March they are fully concluded.
On Wednesday, the visit of the general director of Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), Óscar Arsenio Argüello Ruíz, was expected to follow up on the construction of a new passenger building, control tower and safety ditch that meant its conclusion from the last December, however the official did not arrive. The progress of the works presents 68 percent in the passenger building.
García Magaña recalled that the air terminal has grown potentially in recent years, just the year that ended there was a 15 percent increase in passenger arrivals compared to 2018 that had 321 thousand passengers. In 2019, 369 thousand passengers arrived. In terms of cargo, growth occurred at five percent compared to the end of 2018.
He said they want to connect Chetumal with more destinations or increase the connection with the center of the country. Currently, this terminal adds up to eight operations on Mondays with routes that connect Mexico City, Cancun and Merida, as well as Guadalajara.
He revealed that there is interest because international connection flights are realized, however there is still nothing concrete because the demand is analyzed.
By modernizing the airport, they plan to improve the services offered, especially in reducing waiting times to collect luggage.
He added that this year there will be more investments for the passenger building, as well as the hiring of more staff to attend the facilities.
