Cancun is making waves in the realm of air connectivity, and it’s all thanks to the efforts of the local government and stakeholders. Ana Paty Peralta, the Municipal President, recently celebrated the news that Cancun International Airport is now one of the top three airports in Mexico in terms of the number of seats available for international flights. This milestone was achieved in June 2023 and positions Cancun as a leading destination for travelers from around the globe.

A comprehensive report by Miguel Torruco Marqués, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, revealed that Cancun International Airport is joined by Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and Guadalajara International Airport as the powerhouses of international air travel into the country. Together, these airports have accounted for a staggering 25.4 million seats, making up an impressive 73.2% of the total seats available for international travel to Mexico.

What sets Cancun apart is its strong international links. According to Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, Cancun dominates in this area with two out of the top three busiest international routes. The Dallas-Cancun route leads the pack with 716,129 scheduled seats, closely followed by the Toronto-Cancun route with 606,827 seats. Los Angeles-Guadalajara also features prominently with 652,253 seats.

It’s not just international routes that are thriving; domestic travel is also flourishing. The main internal routes, specifically between AICM and Cancun, have seen a surge in seat availability, boasting over 2.5 million seats in both directions. Another key domestic route is AICM-Monterrey, which offers 2,073,000 seats.

Ana Paty Peralta is keen on leveraging this upward trend to benefit the local community. Her administration is focusing on what she calls the “five pillars of tourism”: sports, education, health, culture, and social engagement. These are designed to not only attract more visitors but to also generate employment and improve the quality of life for the people of Cancun.

In conclusion, the rise of Cancun International Airport as a hub for both international and domestic flights is no small feat. With a clear focus on enhancing connectivity and promoting diverse forms of tourism, Cancun is solidifying its reputation as a must-visit destination, not just for vacationers but also for investors and stakeholders in the travel industry.
