Mexico Launches “Kutsari” Program to Boost Semiconductor Industry
In a strategic move to strengthen Mexico’s role in the global semiconductor industry, President Claudia Sheinbaum has introduced the “Kutsari” program. This ambitious initiative aims to harness Mexico’s scientific and technological expertise to develop cutting-edge semiconductor designs, ultimately enhancing the country’s position in this high-value sector.
Key Objectives of the Kutsari Program
The program is structured in two crucial phases:
- Design & Innovation: The establishment of the National Semiconductor Design Center serves as the foundation of the initiative. This center will bring together leading Mexican scientists and engineers to develop state-of-the-art semiconductor designs. The emphasis will be on securing patents and driving commercialization, both domestically and internationally.
- Manufacturing Expansion: The second phase focuses on scaling up semiconductor production within Mexico. This initiative seeks to meet domestic demand for critical chips used in key industries, including automotive, medical equipment, home appliances, and sensor technologies.
Strategic Locations
The first National Semiconductor Design Centers will be established in Puebla, Jalisco, and Sonora. These locations were selected based on their existing technological capabilities and their potential to drive balanced regional economic development.
Strengthening the Legal Framework
To ensure the success of the Kutsari program, the government is working on legislative and regulatory enhancements. This includes streamlining patent registration processes and proposing constitutional reforms that allow for joint ventures between public, private, and hybrid enterprises.
