In order to open the archaeological zone of Ichkabal, the exploration and restoration work must first be completed.

The lack of agreements with ejidatarios from Bacalar to have legal certainty of land ownership is just one of the reasons why the tourism project in the Ichkabal archaeological zone has not been able to prosper.

Margarito Molina Rendón, director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Quintana Roo, said the feasibility study has yet to be completed, consisting of archaeological research and restoration work on the buildings of the Mayan city of Ichkcabal, which will take about three more years.

He mentioned that to carry out these works, about 16 million pesos are required, and to obtain them, the INAH Quintana Roo will have to make synergy with the next state administration through a collaboration agreement.

He added that in addition to what has already been mentioned, work will still have to be done to improve the access road, the service infrastructure, the training of personnel, and everything that entails to receive and provide attention to tourism in this important archaeological complex.
