Bacalar is considered the tourist jewel of southern Quintana Roo and it’s having millions of dollars invested in hotels and apartments for baby boomers. According to Carlos Joaquín González, Governor of the state, around US$120 million are been injected.
For his part, the municipal president, José Alfredo Contreras Méndez, handed out distinctions and seals of tourism quality to outstanding companies and also highlighted the importance of orderly and sustainable growth.
On the other hand, the governor delivered to the municipality of Bacalar, modernization and rehabilitation works of the Coastal Boulevard, which had an investment of 53 million pesos.
The head of the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, pointed out at the time that the growth in hotel infrastructure in Bacalar does not point to “all inclusive”, because it is called to be an exclusive destination and for tourists with high purchasing power who are looking for sustainable options to rest.
Cueto Riestra specified at the time that the idea and the projects that have been presented with the possibility of being developed in Bacalar, are focused on more sustainable, exclusive concepts and with greater economic benefit and take advantage of tourists who pay higher rates.
According to tourism indicators from Sedetur, from 2018 to 2022, Bacalar went from 62 hotels and 573 rooms to 90 lodging centers and 1,050 rooms.
Which makes it the tourist destination with the highest growth in hotel infrastructure in the Grand Costa Maya, an area that also includes Chetumal and Mahahual.
The governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín, highlighted that the state has three cities that have been growing in double digits for several years: Cancún, which has been growing for 35 years, Playa del Carmen, which has been growing for 20 years. , and Tulum, which has been on the rise for just over 5 years and Bacalar which is also beginning to grow significantly in the southern part of the state.
