QUINTANA ROO LEADS MEXICO IN ECONOMIC GROWTH
Quintana Roo has emerged as the top state for economic growth in Mexico, according to the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). The state showed a remarkable economic performance in the last quarter of 2023, registering a 10.7 percent increase based on the Quarterly Indicator of State Economic Activity (ITAEE).
This impressive growth rate placed Quintana Roo at the forefront among the 32 states in Mexico, boasting an annual growth of 10.2 percent — the only state to achieve a double-digit increase.
A significant portion of this growth can be attributed to substantial developments in secondary sectors, particularly infrastructure projects undertaken throughout 2023. Major initiatives such as the Maya Train, the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Tulum International Airport, the Nichupté Bridge, and the renovation of Colosio Boulevard were pivotal. These projects not only spurred economic activity but also created thousands of jobs, leading to an astounding 144 percent annual growth in the state.
Neighboring regions also witnessed notable economic improvements, with Campeche experiencing a 109 percent growth and Yucatán seeing a 9 percent increase, highlighting a generally positive economic trend in the region.
During a tour of these key projects at the end of 2023, Governor Mara Lezama emphasized the broader impact of these developments. She pointed out that the projects are set to foster growth and improve living conditions, particularly for communities in central and southern Quintana Roo.
“The work also generates new jobs with shared prosperity, mainly for the youth who are now training as railway technicians and professionals to join the operation and maintenance of the emblematic project,” she remarked, underlining the long-term benefits for the local workforce.
