TAG Airlines, a 100% Guatemalan airline, has announced that it will double its flight capacity in Mexico by the end of the third quarter of 2023. The CEO of TAG Airlines, Julio Gamero, revealed that the airline plans to expand its route network by acquiring five ATR 72–500 aircraft as part of its renovation plans, of which two have already been received. The airline’s capacity to connect with Cancun, Quintana Roo has already doubled as a result of these plans.

TAG Airlines is known as the “Airline of the Mayan World” and currently connects Guatemala with destinations in Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, and Mexico. According to the CEO, the airline aims to create “Mesoamerican bridges” that were previously lacking in southern Mexico and Central America.

The airline’s expansion plans will include the new Tulum International Airport and the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA). Julio Gamero confirmed that these federal government projects are part of the airline’s route expansion plan. He stated that the Tulum Airport and all infrastructure, transportation, and connectivity projects generate greater synergy for the airline’s goal of making the Mayan World even bigger. The AIFA is also viewed as a project with great potential and could become part of the airline’s route network.

TAG Airlines has already doubled its capacity with higher-density aircraft and plans to do the same at the end of the third quarter with the rest of the states it is connected to, namely Yucatan, Chiapas, and Oaxaca. The airline has also been in talks with representatives from the state of Guerrero, Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Queretaro, Tabasco, and Campeche to expand their air connections.

The airline’s expansion plans coincide with the growing demand for air travel in Mexico, particularly in the tourism sector. With these plans, TAG Airlines is poised to meet the needs of travelers looking for a reliable and efficient means of transportation to explore Mexico’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
